Welcome from the Chair!

The International Society for the Prevention & Mitigation of Natural Hazards (Natural Hazards Society, NHS) is a legally established NGO and not-for-profit organization aiming to study natural and anthropogenic hazards and to promote activities for the prevention from, and mitigation of, relevant risks through international and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Every natural or legal person or organization from the public or the private sector dealing with, or having interest in, the NHS activities is welcome to join us!! Greetings!

Dr. Gerassimos A. Papadopoulos

In 1982 a group of collaborating scientists initiated the International Conference series “HAZARDS”. The Natural Hazards Society started its activities in 1988 having as main activity the continuation of the HAZARDS conference series and publishing the scientific journal “Natural Hazards” in collaboration with Kluwer, today Springer. The Conference series “HAZARDS” has included so far 11 international conferences in various countries around the globe (Mexico, Italy, China, Canada, Greece, Japan, India, Turkey etc.) in collaboration with, or taking sponsorship from, various international organizations (e.g. IUGG, UN-DNIDR etc.) and many other national organizations and stakeholders.

Currently the NHS is a legally established NGO and not-for-profit organization (Chair: Dr Gerassimos A. Papadopoulos; e-mail: gerassimospapadopoulos2@gmail.com).

The program of the Natural Hazards Society is based on a variety of activities including the organization of international conferences, workshops and seminars, training schools, applied studies, field trips, the publication of selected conference papers in the journal “Natural Hazards” (Springer, former Kluwer) after peer review as well as conference proceedings volumes.

Working Groups

Currently a re-organization of the Working Groups (WGs) is ongoing. The next cross-cutting WGs are foreseen to start working in the near future:

  • WG1 Hazard Assessment & Forecasting,
  • WG2 Vulnerability & Risk Assessment,
  • WG3 Early Warning Systems,
  • WG4 Preparedness, Recovery & Rehabilitation,
  • WG5 Training & Public Awareness

To express your interest please send e-mail message to gerassimospapadopoulos2@gmail.com.

Natural Hazards (Springer)

Natural Hazards: Journal of the International Society for the Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Hazards. ISSN: 0921-030X (Print) 1573-0840 (Online)

The journal “Natural Hazards” is devoted to original research work on all aspects of natural hazards, including the forecasting of catastrophic events, risk management, and the nature of precursors of natural and technological hazards.

Although hazards can originate in different sources and systems, such as atmospheric, hydrologic, oceanographic, volcanologic, seismic, neotectonic, the environmental impacts are equally catastrophic. This warrants a close interaction between different scientific and operational disciplines, aimed at enhancing the mitigation of hazards.

Coverage includes such categories of hazard as atmospheric, climatological, oceanographic, storm surges, tsunamis, floods, snow, avalanches, landslides, erosion, earthquakes, volcanoes, man-made and technological, as well as risk assessment.

The scientific journal Natural Hazards is regularly published by Springer (former Kluwer) in collaboration with the Natural Hazards Society. However, NHS organizes also special issues with selected papers after a peer review process. In addition, NHS publishes Conference Abstracts and/or Proceedings volumes.
